The best long weekend getaways to Spain’s small cities

Spain’s bigger cities might grab most of the attention, but some of the European country’s best long weekends happen in the smaller places. These are the places that feel a lot slower and more laid back. Instead of rushing between major tourist attractions, smaller destinations give you more time to actually enjoy where you are. Long lunches, quiet streets and scenic walking routes all become part of the experience, especially if you are trying to slow down for a few days.

Many of Spain’s smaller cities and towns are also perfect for more active travellers. You can spend the morning exploring local markets and old town squares, then head out for a hike, beach walk or scenic drive in the afternoon. For anyone looking for a relaxed escape with a bit of everything thrown in, these spots are hard to beat.

If you are searching for the best small cities in Spain for a weekend away, these 5 destinations deserve a place on your list.

Comillas

Located on Spain’s northern coast and only an hour away from Santander, Comillas offers a mix of elegant old buildings, green countryside and sandy beaches. It’s small enough for a long weekend, but there is more than enough to fill a few slow days. The town also works well for travellers who enjoy mixing beach time with gentle walking routes and relaxed afternoons by the sea.

The best time to visit is during the late spring and early autumn. During this time, you will experience mild weather and quieter beaches. Whereas summer brings warmer temperatures and a more lively atmosphere with more people around.

Top things to do

  • Visit Gaudí’s colourful Capricho villa
  • Walk along Comillas Beach

With cobblestone streets, stone buildings and flower-filled balconies, Santillana del Mar is located in Cantabria, close to Spain’s northern coastline. It offers a picture-perfect atmosphere. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect place to slow down, switch off your brain and relax for a few days. Many of the streets are pedestrian-friendly, making it easier to explore at a slower pace.

Summer offers warm weather and longer evenings. But if you’re looking for a quieter time, then spring and autumn still provide sunshine, just with slightly cooler temperatures. This is perfect for walking and sightseeing.

Why these smaller Spanish destinations work so well for long weekends

One of the best things about Spain’s smaller cities and towns is how easy they are to enjoy. You can walk almost anywhere, avoid packed itineraries and spend more time outdoors instead of rushing between attractions. They are also much easier to explore over a shorter trip. This makes them ideal for spontaneous weekend breaks throughout the year.

Whether you prefer coastal scenery, mountain hiking, historic streets or long lunches in sunny plazas, these destinations offer a more relaxed way to experience Spain over a few days away.
