Bansko is a ski town in south-west Bulgaria, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Much of the range around it is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, but the ski area is one of two patches UNESCO deliberately left outside the protected boundary when it extended the site in 2010.
Among British skiers, Bansko has a reputation as the cheap place to learn, and the numbers mostly back it up. The Post Office Travel Money Ski Report 2026, an annual cost comparison from the Post Office’s foreign currency service, ranked it fourth of 32 European resorts for value. An adult’s week of lift pass, ski hire, lessons, lunches and drinks came to just over £700.
Most of what you’ll pay on the mountain comes off the lift company’s published price list, which is the same for everyone skiing that week. The flight is the cost you have most control over, because you choose the airport, the airline and the day, so carefully price Sofia flights from London before you settle on a week.
Getting from London to Bansko
Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, has the nearest airport, and the resort puts Bansko 150 km from the city. Four London airports have non-stop flights to Sofia, and the flight takes a little over three hours:
- Heathrow: British Airways and Bulgaria Air both fly the route.
- Gatwick: easyJet flies it in the winter season.
- Luton: Wizz Air flies all year.
- Stansted: Ryanair flies all year.
If you’re hiring skis in Bansko, you won’t have a ski bag to pay for on the plane.
Be sure to book the road transfer when you book the flight, so your landing time and your pick-up line up.
What a beginner’s week costs on the mountain
Bulgaria adopted the Euro on 1 January 2026, so that’s the currency on Bansko’s price list. The lift company hadn’t posted day-pass prices for the 2026/27 winter by mid-October, so these are last winter’s peak rates, which applied from December 27 to March 31:
- Lift pass: An adult six-day pass cost €341.
- Ski hire: Skis, boots and poles for six days cost €94. Renting the full set from Ulen, the company that runs the lifts, takes 10% off your lift pass, or 15% if you also book an instructor through Ulen.
- Lessons: Six days of group lessons cost €252, or €169 for half days, in groups of three to 12 people.
Add those up with the rental discount and a week comes to a little over €650.
Late season is cheaper. From April 1 the same six-day pass dropped to €259, though by then the season has less than a fortnight left to run.
Where beginners ski
You learn on the mountain rather than in town. A gondola more than six kilometres long carries you from Bansko up to Banderishka Polyana, at its top station, and three things matter in your first week:
- Blue runs: Blue is the gentlest of the resort’s three run grades, below red and black, and four named runs carry it: Plato 1, Shiligarnik 1, Shiligarnik 2 and Kolarski.
- Nursery lifts: The resort runs a baby-lift area with two moving carpets and three drag lifts, each 100 metres long.
- The gondola down: It runs from 08:30 to 17:00 and carries skiers down as well as up, so you don’t have to ski back to town on tired legs.
What to sort before you fly
Four things need doing before you leave home:
- Passport: Bulgaria follows the rules of the Schengen area, the group of European countries with no border checks between them. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive, and it must expire at least three months after you leave.
- Border registration: The EU’s Entry/Exit System, which records visitors’ fingerprints and photos, may ask for both when you land, so allow extra time at Sofia airport going in and coming home.
- Health cover: A GHIC, the UK’s Global Health Insurance Card, covers medically necessary state healthcare in Bulgaria. Many private clinics won’t accept it, and the UK government warns that some resort clinics have overcharged tourists, so take out travel insurance that covers skiing and agree any price before treatment.
- Emergencies: Prepare for emergencies by knowing the number. Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.
Book it in this order
- Pick a week inside the 2026/27 season, which the resort has set for December 1 2026 to April 11 2027, snow permitting.
- Book the flight and the transfer from Sofia together.
- Rent your kit from Ulen, so the discount comes off your lift pass.
After that, the only thing left to plan is which blue run you fall over on first.
