Pros: What’s good about the Camelbak Rim Runner?
Lightness & Versatility: At just 690g, the Rim Runner X22 feels impressively light on the trail. The low weight let me carry extra layers, snacks and gear for full-day hikes without the burden of a heavier traditional pack. With 22L of capacity, it easily stretches to light multi-day use when packed efficiently.
Adjustability: The pack offers smart, straightforward adjustability for different loads – from lightly loaded day hikes to fuller carries. The harness system, compression straps, and removable stability belt keep everything stable and balanced without unnecessary complexity.
Pockets & Organisation: Useful side-stretch pockets, a large front stretch overflow pocket, and a zippered essentials organization pocket provide solid storage. Dual daisy chains and trekking pole attachment points add extra versatility. The internal hydration sleeve is well-designed. If you prefer lots of individual compartments, you may want an organizer or a different pack style.
Comfort on the Trail: The Air Support back panel delivers good breathability and light structure. It’s noticeably more pared-down than the CamelBak Fourteener 32, but still provides decent airflow and stability for long days.
Hydration: CamelBak remains a leader in hydration systems. The included Crux 1.5L reservoir performs reliably, and the pack easily accommodates additional water bottles when needed.
Cons: What’s not so good about the Camelbak Rim Runner?
The side-mesh pockets are stretchy but could offer better accessibility. Reaching a handheld water bottle on the move feels awkward when the pack is full. (This is a not an issue if you primarily use the reservoir.)
The shoulder strap pocket is on the smaller side and it would benefit from a bit more room to comfortably fit a collapsible bottle or other small essentials.
The waist strap is sufficient, but minimal. It provides basic stability but doesn’t offer anything of extra pockets or load transfer.
Conclusion
The Rim Runner X22 is a great lightweight hiking pack with enough space for a spare set of clothes, rain jacket, sandals, towel, snacks, and water – perfect for long days or minimalist multi-day hikes on trails like the Camino. The semi-rigid back support increases airflow while the overall low weight makes it easy to carry all day. If you want a simple, capable, and light pack focused on essentials, this one is worth strong consideration.
