How to choose the right hire car for a Scottish outdoor adventure

Planning an outdoor adventure when you’re visiting multiple areas of Scotland is no easy task. There’s so much to think about beyond the routes you walk and the activities you take part in. You also need to think about the best way to get from one location to another, which in a widely rural country like Scotland isn’t always simple.

Hiring a car is often the most convenient and easiest way to get around, but it’s not as straightforward as choosing the first car you see or the “coolest” option. You need to consider the practicality of each vehicle too. So, with that in mind, here’s how to choose the right hire car for your Scottish adventure.

Choosing a Car: Elements to Consider

Vehicle Size

You need to find the perfect balance between a hire car that is spacious and comfortable enough, but also suits the narrow roads of some of Scotland’s most rural areas. The further into the countryside you plan on going, the more important this consideration becomes, as this is where roads can get especially cramped and winding.

Luggage Capacity

You also need to think about the size of the boot and any specialist equipment or bikes that may need rails or additional space. If you’re planning a lengthier trip, you need to ensure there is enough space to comfortably fit all your luggage and equipment.

Comfort

Overall comfort is essential if you’re going to be on the road for long periods of time. Think about how much leg room each passenger needs and the shape and material of the seats, plus things like heating, air conditioning, and sound system.

Driving Range

You may have to go long stretches without a petrol station, so it’s also important to consider how far a full tank of fuel will take you. A smaller car that can only hold enough fuel for a hundred miles or so may not be suitable for more rural Scottish adventures.

Stick to Reputable Car Hire Businesses

When hiring a car, the most important thing to consider is where you rent it from. Some hire companies charge extortionate amounts or are highly restrictive on what you can and can’t hire or the payment methods you can use.

It’s best to stick to companies such as Indigo Car Hire, who have an extensive selection of cars and suppliers, and can offer expertise to get you the most suitable car at the best price.

Hit the Road and Enjoy!

Once you’ve considered the size, luggage capacity, comfort, and driving range of a vehicle, it’s time to hire and hit the road and enjoy.
